Executive Director Report
2016 was an active and productive year for GSC. We continued to be amazed at the amount of families still in need in our "improved" economy.
The number of homeless mothers and children in need of temporaty shelter has soared. GSC has networked with the Homeless Coaition, Community Housing Network, Abigayle Ministries, Macomb Charitable and MCCSA, along with our member churches to provie emergency shelter for homeless mothers and their children who are close to getting into stable housing.
Under-employment continues to be a huge factor in families not being able to make ends meet. When both parents are working part time jobs at $9.00 to $10.00 an hour and rent is an average of $700.00 a month, there is not much left over after taxes, car expenses and food. Needs like medicaitons, clothing and utlity bills often go unpurchased or unpaid.
On a positive note, we do see families that have a modest income that should be sufficient to meet their monthly needs. So GSC will be starting a new program to encourage families, that we feel could be self-sufficient, to look at their finances in a new way. We will encourage them to take Budgeting Classes and Life Skill Classes at MSU Extension Services and/or Debt Management Counselinf at Grene Path. We hope that be reviewing their current financial choices and learning a better way to budget, they will be able to avoide future emergency situations.
GSC's current Office Staff has 4 part time employees, 2 extraordinary volunteers and a part time person from MI WORKS. Those of you who have seen our office know it is very modest and usually amazed at the amount of work that goes on in such a small space. We may be small but God's Grace is enless and He is able to accomplish great things!
Over the last 6 years and 9 months (2010 through September 30, 2016) by networking together we have assisted 2294 famlies with $2,241,722.56 (an average of $977.00 per family). Of this amount, the Member churches have assisted with 18%, Agencies 21%, THAW 40% and the Families 21%. This does not include the countless families that we have walked through the system who did not need to come back to GSC for further assistance. It is amazing what can be accomplised when we join resources and work together!
Did you know that as GSC Member Churches you are actually the owners of GSC? Never thought of it that way? Well it is true! This is why your support is so vital to the continued success of Good Shepherd Coalition! The GSC Board and staff do fundraisers to help meet some of the extra overhead costs but without your continued generous support, GSC would be severely limited in its ability to reach out with assistance for families in crisis.
Thank you again for your gracious and generous support.
